Nowhere to put the "I'll deal with it later" pile

Mail you just pulled out of the mailbox. A form that still needs your signature. A receipt you can throw away as soon as it's scanned. All of it is "later" work — but there's nowhere to keep it until later actually comes, and before you know it a small geological layer has formed at the edge of your desk.

Filing it properly at this stage feels like overkill. And anything unfinished, once it's tucked neatly away, has a way of disappearing from your mind completely.

For now, just split it in two

This folder has two pockets, and each one is labeled with a single status. You don't have to decide what happens to anything — you can drop it in at the level of "haven't started" or "already moving."

Sort any finer than that and the sorting itself becomes the job. So: two. That's about as much as anyone can keep up without thinking.

Three versions, and how to use each one

To Do / In Progress

For keeping track of work documents. Anything waiting on you — a signature, a stamp, a reply you owe someone — goes in To Do. Anything that has left your hands and is moving along elsewhere, like a document out for review, goes in In Progress. Just separating "waiting on me" from "waiting on someone else" gives you one obvious place to look first thing in the morning.

To Check / To File Soon

For holding mail. When something arrives, put it into To Check before you even open it — nothing gets lost, nothing spreads out across the desk. Once you've read it, anything with an action or a deadline stays up front; anything already handled moves to To File Soon, and when enough has built up you file or discard the whole batch in one go.

Keep for Now / Goodbye Box

For people who collect paper. Shop cards, flyers, stamps and tickets all sit flat, with nothing bent or creased. Anything you might still want for another page after scrapbooking or filing, and anything you'd rather sit with a little longer before letting go, goes in the Goodbye Box. Even the paper you can't quite throw away yet gets a place of its own.

How I use mine

I keep receipts waiting to be scanned, and documents that still need translating, in To Do. Once I've made a start on something it moves to In Progress, and when the accounting period closes I file everything at once and empty the folder to reset it. Having a fixed day when the pockets go back to zero is what stops things from quietly accumulating.

A few words on the back

Even messy piles of paper are probably traces of ideas.
Tuck them in here for now, and when you're feeling calm again, ask which ones you really need.
